INTRODUCTION
The success of Rivington Street Studios' De
Grey Court building for York St John
University owes a great deal to an
intelligent selection of materials. As the
following article explains, the University's
original brief required a building that
would have a unique identity, but that
would also fit harmoniously with the
carefully maintained historic surroundings
of York city centre. The architect and
contractor's decision to work closely with
York Handmade, the leading independent
brick manufacturer in the north of England,
was a key component to achieving both
