RIVINGTON STREET STUDIO ARCHITECTS RESPONDED TO YORK ST JOHN'S CALL FOR A `BOLD AND EXCITING STATEMENT ABOUT THE UNVISERSITY' WITH A BUILDING THAT IS CLEVERLY INTEGRATED INTO ITS SURROUNDINGS, BUT STILL HAS COMMANDING PRESENCE ON THE CITY'S OUTSKIRTS in York city centre that isn't packaged, preserved and marketed for visitors. This makes York a difficult, almost impossible, place for modern architects. There's timidity, and often open antagonism, towards contemporary architecture.
