INTRODUCTION<br />
The success of Rivington Street Studios' De<br />
Grey Court building for York St John<br />
University owes a great deal to an<br />
intelligent selection of materials. As the<br />
following article explains, the University's<br />
original brief required a building that<br />
would have a unique identity, but that<br />
would also fit harmoniously with the<br />
carefully maintained historic surroundings<br />
of York city centre. The architect and<br />
contractor's decision to work closely with<br />
York Handmade, the leading independent<br />
brick manufacturer in the north of England,<br />
was a key component to achieving both<br />
